June 2017

June is fast approaching and the end of FY 2017 and start of FY 2018 will take place in the next several weeks! This could be the third straight year we have entered a new FY without a State budget to assist with the expense of offering a variety of State and Federal programs for the seniors in Whiteside County. Many seniors in our area need vital services to assist them in their pursuit of staying in their homes for as long as they want. Please contact your local legislators to ask for their support in helping to fund these vital programs. These are not programs to provide anyone with a "free ride" but programs to help seniors maintain a sustainable life without becoming a burden on their families and neighbors. There has to be a happy medium where both sides can look at what is best for the people rather than what is best for them!
I want to welcome several new staff members who have joined us at the WCSC. Please stop by and welcome Beth Sterk who joined us on May 15 as the Assistant Director of the Whiteside County Senior Center. Beth will be working with our program staff including the Senior Services, activities, reception, and daily meal program to look for ways to make sure our services are received by those who need them and to provide a variety of new programs or make some adjustments in our current programs. We also welcome Monte Grooms as the Kitchen Manager and Rose Tarbill as Assistant Kitchen manager as we work to make improvements in our daily meal program. Please stop by and visit with all of the staff members and let us know if we are meeting your needs at the WCSC!
Please check out some of the new activities and trips we are offering over the next several months as we have two trips to Starved Rock State Park and other area attractions. We are trying to set up some day trips this summer and fall besides the Casino trips. Please let Betty know if you have a place a group of 30-50 people would like to visit. Don't forget to get your seats for the Cubs vs Reds game on Friday, September 29 at Wrigley Field. We have one bus full and are working hard to fill the second bus. Get your tickets now as the Cubs are going to get hot and everyone is going to want to go on this trip!
There are numerous activities going on during July so look through the Echo and find one to your liking. Our air conditioning is a great way to escape the heat and more than likely you will run into an old friend or make a new friend on your visit to the WCSC. Please call us if you have any questions regarding the programs and activities offered at the WCSC! Try to keep cool as it looks like the warm weather has arrived! We are hoping to see you at the Senior Center!

Until next month! Doug
